Looking for God?

Many people get connected to a church because they are looking for God. Perhaps this is why you’ve come to our website. Maybe you’ve had a number of spiritual experiences and are trying to make sense of them. Maybe you’re uncertain about God but would like to explore the possibility that God, prayer, and the supernatural are as real as people say.

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey we welcome you. At Grace we have a motto, “Doubts are ok, questions are welcome, and please, come as you are.” At Grace we give lots of time and attention to helping adults of all ages plug into God and the awesome and mysterious world that He created. We do that that in lots of ways, including through our worship services, classes on the spiritual life, and by making available individual spiritual direction and coaching for those who are interested.

Here are some first steps you might find helpful in your search for God.

Pray

Praying isn’t hard. Lots of people try to make it hard. Talk to God as you would talk to a friend. There are plenty of written prayers that you can use, though it's important to be able pray to God in your own words. Start by praying sometime in the morning (maybe when you get up) and then sometime in the evening (perhaps before bed). If you’re stuck and can’t think of anything to pray about just say something like “God help me start this new day well” or “God thank you for this day that is past.”

Read

To grow in faith or to become more attuned to spiritual things requires some mental work. So start reading some helpful Christian material, could be the Bible (we recommend you start with the Book of Mark which is the shortest book in the Bible about the life of Jesus), some short brochures about Christian beliefs (we have lots of those for you to take), or some full-length books exploring Christian life (we have several of those for you to borrow from our lending library).

Relate

Healthy spirituality always leads to connecting with others. So yes, you can experience God out on the golf-course, but your experience of God will be limited without regularly relating to other people who are also seeking God.  Why? Because God is so infinite that to even begin to appreciate God we have to hear how other people perceive Him. A good way to start meeting other God seekers is to begin attending one of our Sunday services.

Some other helpful reminders….

1. God is seeking you. God has always been seeking you in order to have friendship with you.

2. You’ve probably already experienced God in some significant way in your life, though you may not realize it or have the words to talk about it yet.

3. God is for everyone not just certain types of people – that means you’re included. You don’t have to become “churchy” or “religious” (as it’s usually thought of) to become a person of faith.

4. You don’t have to check your brain at the door. Christianity has a marvelous intellectual tradition with an amazing rigor and depth. At the same time you don’t have to be a geek to be a spiritual person either. Christianity isn’t just about reading books (or even the book, the Bible), it’s also about taking action to make the world a better place.

5. You're not alone. We are here to help you and walk with you on your journey of faith. Life is a great adventure and worth sharing with others.
